The apparitions are thought to be various incarnations of Macduff. They are shown to Macbeth by the witches and tell him t beware Macduff, but Macbeth is safe until Birnam forest marches on his castle. Also, no man born of woman will hurt him.
The apparitions the witches produced were most definitely the cause of Macbeth's over-confidence when faced with Malcolm and Macduff's pursuit of him. They made him feel as if no man could conquer him, but he discovered all the things the apparitions had told him had fatal loopholes.
The apparitions are ghost that come to Macbeth when he is talking to the three witches.
